Wood work: Coloured rugs double as DIY sculptures

03 : 10 : 2013 Wood : DIY Sculpture : Rug

Berlin – German designer Elisa Strozyk’s Colored Wooden Rugs do more than the name suggests. They are indeed wooden rugs coloured in geometric patterns reminiscent of Aztec prints. But they are also DIY sculptures, personalised works of art that can be folded to fit the owner’s taste and living space.

Strozyk’s Colored Wooden Rugs are made from hundreds of laser-cut wooden triangles attached to a textile base. ‘The outcome is a material that is half wood, half textile,’ she says. ‘It looks and smells familiar, but feels strange, as it is able to move and form in unexpected ways.’

Strozyk, who graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins in 2010 and was awarded the Federal Republic of Germany Young Talent Design prize in the same year, has used the same process to create flexible wooden cabinets, lamps and textiles.

Like the designers in our Maison et Object design direction, Elisa Strozyk creates products that are playful and functional. For more on the ways in which consumers are customising their living spaces, see our Hacked Home microtrend and Innovate feature on Vincent Tarisien.
