Otsu, Japan – Japanese designer Naoya Matsumoto has collaborated with students from Seian University of Art and Design to create an on-campus pop-up bar made out of reeds.
The structure is made from yoshi, a reed grass found in abundance around Lake Biwa. The university is located near the lake, and each year students are invited to design something using the locally sourced material. This year they designed a pavilion that is environmentally friendly, both in its use of a sustainable material and in its evocation of the nature that surrounds it.
The bar is an iteration of the Crafted Locale design direction in which businesses incorporate local materials and integrate their outside environs into architectural and design details.
