Abstract body of work

23 : 03 : 2017 JW Anderson : Luxury : Exhibition

Wakefield – JW Anderson has curated a new exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield.

  • The exhibition gathers more than 100 objects from the fields of art, fashion, ceramics and design
  • Each piece in the show has been approached as a different body

The fashion designer, whose work often explores the notions of gender and identity, has curated a collection of more than 100 pieces of design for the Disobedient Bodies exhibition.

Featuring art, fashion and ceramics, the pieces on show include work from Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and fashion designers Christian Dior and Rei Kawakubo. At the centre of the space is an installation of oversized jumpers, inviting visitors to transform their own bodies into abstract shapes.

The space has been transformed by 6a architects, who have turned the gallery into various rooms inspired by fabrics from Anderson’s archives.

‘I want the exhibition to mirror the speed and unexpected encounters that characterise the way in which we consume images today, as well as being a space in which to explore ideas of gender and identity that have been an ongoing part of my creative process,’ the designer explains in a statement.

The Big Picture

A number of brands are taking a pivotal role in curating culture, and encouraging conversations that go beyond their specialism. See how Fendi also opened an exhibition of contemporary art in our Briefing report.
