Hyper-reality by Keiichi Matsuda, London

London – Our Global Futures Forum is just two weeks away and we're very excited to announce the inclusion of multidisciplinary artist Keiichi Matsuda as one of our top 20 Disruptors.

  • Matsuda’s most recent film, Hyper-reality, imagines a future in which augmented reality (AR) dominates our lives
  • The film taps into consumer concerns about the impact of new technology on our future privacy and security

One of our keynote talks at next month’s inaugural Global Futures Forum is on the theme of The Dislocated World, and examines how brands need to adapt in our current climate of distrust, disconnection and disorder. For this reason it is only fitting that Keiichi Matsuda will be screening his latest work, Hyper-reality, as part of our Disruptors’ Labyrinth on the day, highlighting deep-seated concerns about where our rapid technological development is taking us.

Shot entirely on location in the Colombian city of Medellín with the help of production agency Fractal, Hyper-reality partly celebrates emerging technologies, but also questions how wealth will create virtual barriers between social classes in the future. The near future depicted in the film is rife with biohackers – petty criminals tasked with stealing blood from citizens in order to access their online accounts and steal their cryptocurrency.

It also examines how AR and integrated reality will change the way in which people interact with the urban environment, enable brands to have more personal relationships with customers and enhance their physical spaces. According to Matsuda, the film is the first in a series of interconnected shorts that will re-imagine the augmented, hyper-reality world in order to paint a picture of our future urban lives.
