Divided spaces

06 : 01 : 2016 Bouroullec Brothers : Tel Aviv Museum Of Art : 17 Screens

Tel Aviv – The humble room divider has been given a 21st-century makeover thanks to designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

  • Watercolour drawings were translated into a set of units made from materials such as glass, aluminium, ceramics and textile mesh
  • The surfaces create an interplay of light and colour that corresponds to changing ambient conditions

The pair created 17 screens for their solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, inspired by forms from nature and the possibilities of using modern materials and techniques to re-invent a traditional piece of furniture.

The objects, created using materials such as anodised aluminium, cable and enamelled ceramic, challenge the original purpose of the divider by being largely transparent, shaping the flow of movement, light and air around them rather than hiding things from view.

Screen #1 uses a combination of chestnut wood and 3D-printed PLA in a design inspired by plant joints, while Screen #5 features embroidered polyester organised in textured layers, offering glimpses into the other side of the screen.
