Squeaky clean

02 : 10 : 2015 Saponacious : Fernando Laposse : Pocko

London – The humble bar of soap takes centre stage for Saponaceous, the latest exhibition from artist Fernando Laposse.

  • Saponaceous presents the results of the artist’s experimental research into the process of saponification
  • Examines the potential qualities of by-products of the food industry

Using locally sourced goat milk fat, refried oil from chip shops and pork trimmings from a nearby North London butchers, Laposse created bars of soap to feature in a series of functional and interactive objects.

‘The challenge was to transform some of the dirtiest fats out there into things of beauty, not only by purifying them and turning them into nice-smelling soap, but by making beautiful objects with them,’ explains Laposse.

The collection, on display at communications consultancy Pocko, also features a selection of sculptures developed in collaboration with Italian designer Federico Floriani, including a Hair Vase inspired by the African tradition of dipping a horse’s tail in black soap to protect a household from bad spirits.
