Nagasaki, Japan – Several thousand pieces of ceramic tableware have been stacked to create elevated flooring in the newly renovated Maruhiro flagship store.

The store, redesigned for ceramics company Maruhiro by Tokyo-based designer Yusuke Seki, is located in Hasami, a town in Nagasaki which has produced ceramics for over 400 years.

All of the 25,000 pieces were sourced from local pottery factories that had discarded them during the quality control stage of production. Seki filled the ceramics with concrete before stacking them like bricks to create surfaces strong enough to walk on.
