Hong Kong – Appearances can be deceiving, especially at Mrs. Pound, a new restaurant set in the foothills of Sheung Wan’s famous antiques district.
A former food stall in the popular PMQ night market, Mrs. Pound has been re-invented using the legendary tale of a burlesque dancer and her devious lover, the married Mr. Ming.
As the story goes, Mr. Ming created a faux facade for Mrs. Pound’s speakeasy, which acted as a clandestine rendezvous for their fiery affair.
Taking queues from the cult classics of film director Wong Kar Wai, architects NCDA have imagined the secret bar, disguised to the uninitiated as a stamp shop, and only accessible by pressing a secret stamp hidden within a massive illuminated vitrine.
Inside, designers have created a beautifully crafted memento to the affair. Split into two main spaces, the Asian fusion restaurant showcases both a feminine glamour with mirrored marquee lights and delicate gold accents and a rugged masculine counterpoint the focus of which is atmospheric neon artwork.
