Opening doors: Moscow pop-up combines food, drink and art

Moscow – Door 19, a pop-up restaurant, bar and gallery, has opened for a second time, back by popular demand.

Located on the top floor of ArtHouse, a new residential building on the Yauza river, Door 19 is a creative collaboration of Michelin-starred chefs and acclaimed mixologists, featuring artwork from Damien Hirst and Jonathan Meese, among others.

The interior was designed by Russian architects PH.D. They have used a reductionist approach, combining heavy industrial materials such as steel, concrete and wood to make the most of the light and views afforded by the penthouse location and 12m-high ceilings.

The bar and mezzanine level are constructed from scaffolding, giving the space a half-finished look and reflecting the temporary nature of the pop-up concept. The effect is very atmospheric, one element overlapping the other as guests eat and drink surrounded by elaborate light installations and sculptures in a utilitarian experience.

This is the second version of Door 19, part of ArtKvartal, a collective of artists seeking to change the standards and quality of life, work and rest for Muscovites by building a new day-and-night cluster of creative and social activity. It will be open from 25 September to 31 October.
