Tel Aviv – Brake and Bake is a new form of natural packaging for Challah bread rolls in which salt crust acts as the outer skin, gives flavour to the half-baked dough inside and serves as a mould when in the oven.
The mould is held together with egg whites and a nostalgic logo appears to be stamped on the outer shell in edible dye. Once the bread is baked, the outer shell is shattered and will dissolve.
‘I was inspired by the ancient traditions of salt and bread, and the role it plays in Israeli, German and Polish culture,’ explains Ani Dwilanski. ‘The packaging is completely natural and sustainable while also offering a festive way of eating and sharing bread.’
Dwilanski is about to graduate on the Industrial Design course at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Tel Aviv.
This is a great example of forward-thinking packaging that retains a nostalgic warmth. For more examples of this, read our Type Modern design direction.
