Hasselt – The Sense of Sound exhibition gathers together aural works from different artists to explore different manifestations of sound.
The show is a collaboration between Z33, a Belgian house for contemporary art, and Overtoon, a Brussels-based platform for sound art. The exhibition will bring together a range of artists to examine how sound can take shape – as a vibration, as feedback or even as a magnetic field. Circuit03 by Jeroen Vandesande creates sound by using feedback from microphones and speakers, and then concentrating it in long glass tubes. In Katerina Undo’s work, Creatures Cluster, the artist created a composition from solar-powered micro-sized robots that make tiny soft clicks and noises.
‘The various works have one thing in common: sounds can always be traced back to friction that makes the world move,’ says Z33, ‘from the resonance on your skull to your middle ear or from fluctuating voltage to a vibrating magnet. Sound is created when energy escapes, and through air or materials, transforms itself into a sensory sensation.’
