Hidden gem: A breathalyser that's always on hand

18 : 11 : 2013 Wireless : Breathalyser : Lapka BAM

San Francisco – Looking at it, you wouldn’t be able to tell that the object in your hand is a breathalyser. Lapka’s BAM (Breath Alcohol Monitor) is a ceramic black tube that is as discreet as it is luxurious.

The BAM may look like a simple tube, but it is a high-tech monitoring device. Without buttons, it connects wirelessly to an app, and only functions when a hand wraps around it, acting as the mouthpiece that breathes into the tube. Information is then sent to the app, which reveals blood alcohol content information and advises the user whether to go home or continue to mingle.

‘The main idea behind the design is to make everything obsolete,’ Vadik Marmeladov, creative director of Lapka, tells LS:N Global. ‘If you imagine connected devices and wearables in the near future – there will be no product design, no gadgets and no batteries. Can you imagine product design, when these devices will be implemented in your body? So we tried to think how to translate this idea into today’s bulky technology.’

As wearable technology becomes the norm, consumers will seek more refined, sleeker apparatus with which to quantify their lives. For more, see our Fem Tech design direction.
