Stockholm – Multi-disciplinary art collective Barriobajero has created the Internet Souvenirs clothing collection and riso-printed book Awkward Surfaces. Both are inspired by the semiology of cyberspace.
The studio’s work focuses on patterns and signs that we see on the internet, and features textiles and physical prints of these patterns that render the online tangible. Awkward Surfaces and Internet Souvenirs were created using Photoshop to create shapes. The result is a technological ode to nature and the internet which resembles patterns found in nature such as marble or stone.
‘The marble [print] is a homage to a meme that has been flowing through the internet for some years now,’ explain the designers. ‘[We take] a real object that became a famous digital image or texture and return it to real life.’
Barriobajero’s work is reminiscent of our Neo Kitsch design direction, in which artists and designers combine references to create quirky, unique pieces that stand out among mass-produced designs.
