Wandering star: Adventurous design for new lamps

05 : 07 : 2013 Concrete : Rechargeable : Cordless

London – Austrian designer Katharina Eisenköck has created Nomadic Light, a set of three lamps that engage the nomadic spirit of their owner.

Visually, each lamp resembles a hollow explorer’s torch attached to a brass belt. Eisenköck presents her collection on spare wooden shelving or suspended from climbing hooks, adding to the air of rugged charm.

The furniture and product designer says her practice embraces ‘sculptural simplicity’ and a ‘distinct use of materials’. For Nomadic Light, she explored unusual production techniques to create a lightweight concrete lamp base and a boiled leather skeleton.

‘I came across Cuir Bouilli, an ancient method of boiling and shaping leather, while travelling and researching nomadic lifestyles,’ she says. ‘I liked it because my products are for people who travel, who need flexible items for a flexible lifestyle.’

The Nomadic Light lamps are cordless, rechargeable via an induction system, and can be controlled through touch sensors, making them traveller-friendly. For more design inspired by a sense of exploration, discovery and travel, see our Adventurism design direction.
