US – YouTube has added a VHS button to a select number of videos to mark the 57th anniversary of the first commercial video recorder.
Brands are increasingly turning away from slick looks, and opting for designs and aesthetics that hark back to earlier technology and the beginning of the internet, as we reported in our Netstalgia macrotrend.
To apply a VHS effect to videos, which include Daft Punk Ft Pharrell – Get Lucky, users simply press the VHS button next to the annotation button. The videos then play with lines running through them and with a fuzzy aesthetic, mirroring the look of old video tapes.
The effect is one of nostalgia, taking users back to a bygone era and enabling them to enjoy new films and music in the style of an old format.
