Bergen – The city of Bergen in Norway has had its fair share of bad luck. Since the 12th century, it has been burned to the ground 16 times. In remembrance of the city’s unlucky past, Dutch architects Max Rink and Simon de Jong, and designer Rachel Griffin have erected a wooden pavilion, the Bergen Safe House.
The interior of the Safe House consists of wooden platforms that can be configured in different ways for different activities. The platforms can be slotted in at varying heights, enabling visitors to climb to the top of the construction.
In recognition of the city’s past, the architects burned the wooden structure’s exterior as a way of protecting it from any future blazes. This burnt aesthetic is a great example of our Charred and Stained design direction.
