Silk cut: Royz brings design out of its shell

London – As part of the Dezeen Platform showcase for London Design Festival, Israeli textile designer Sivan Royz presented a collection of laser-cut silk purses and jewellery.

The organic forms are made from up to 6,000 silk segments, joined together with string. Each piece contains a central cavity, which has been specially cut to hold items such as phones and lipstick. Through the process of laser-cutting, the edges of the silk have a brown, scorched finish, which adds to the natural, organic quality of the pieces.

‘I was inspired by the structure of plants, flowers and shells,’ the designer tells LS:N Global. ‘I wanted to find a new way of creating organic forms.’
