By the book: Studio draws on a sense of touch

12 : 09 : 2011 Fashion : Design Academy Eindhoven Graduate : Anve

Antwerp – ‘In modern times creativity can be so quickly overshadowed by commerce,’ photographer Piëtro Celestina tells L:SN Global when describing the inspiration for the third version of Atelier Solarshop, the creative studio shop in Antwerp.

The spacious store features specially selected pieces from up and coming creatives, including fashion designer Jan-Jan van Essche and accessories designer Anve. A room divider, Storyboard by Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Jan van Hoof, and made from thousands of books made into bricks, guides visitors around the space.

The names of designers are listed on the shop window, hand-written over painted strips of starch-based emulsion. ‘This time we decided to draw [on it] with pencil to accentuate tactility. It is always lots of work, but we like to put lots of time into the detail,’ says Celestina. This is a great way of making sense of long lists and data.

Look out for our forthcoming Tribe, Self-Quantifiers, which shows that even though people spend a lot of time using digital, they continue to seek a tactile way of processing information, such as hand-written lists or notebooks.
