Compostable coffee

09 : 03 : 2017 Sustainability : Coffee : London

London – Halo is a new coffee brand that sells its products in completely biodegradable coffee capsules.

  • The capsules are compatible with home Nespresso machines and compost in less than 90 days
  • According to Halo, 13,500 non-biodegradable coffee capsules are thrown into landfill every minute

The pods, made with natural fibres of bamboo and paper pulp, have been produced to ensure the flavour of the coffee is unchanged, as well as to maximise water flow and extraction rate.

To help visualise the negative effects of coffee capsules on the environment, the brand has also created an accompanying Digital Landfill microsite. In a running total of the number of coffee capsules now rotting in landfill, the site says that there are more than 53bn non-biodegradable capsules in landfill and it would take over 15 years to scroll to the bottom of the site.

The coffee is made from a number of rare coffees beans, including the Kopi Luwak Diamond bean, and Halo is the first to offer it in capsule form.
