Work-life balance

19 : 07 : 2016 Yuri Pattison : User Space : Workplaces

London – Artist Yuri Pattison’s latest exhibition explores how our working and personal lives are becoming increasingly indistinguishable.

  • His work examines the contrast between a utopian vision of the shared workspace and the reality
  • Each sculpture contains active elements, including a Bitcoin mining rig that monitors online transactions and accumulates capital

Pattison’s two-year residency in east London’s Chisenhale Gallery culminates in User, Space, a reflection on the rise of co-working spaces and hacker culture across the capital.

During his research, Pattison immersed himself in the skill-sharing, grassroots workspace London Hackspace. ‘Its workshop is a stark environment, but the personal, creative projects scattered within the space give it warmth. I wanted to emulate this at Chisenhale.’

Pattison’s sculptures, deliberately left half finished, reflect the constant metamorphosis of offices across the city that straddle both domestic and working spaces. The installations also feature works in which Pattison contrasts abstract views of contemporary workspaces with the interiors of experimental living spaces.

The Big Picture

Through connected devices the offices of the future will be even more transparent in the pursuit of seamless optimisation. Architect Carlo Ratti presents one vision of how the office of the future might look for the Agnelli Foundation.
