Roll up: Nike SB creates Aztec-inspired haven for skateboarders

Mexico City – Nike SB, the skateboarding subsidiary of Nike, has collaborated with the Mexico City government to build the Templo Mayor, the first free street league-certified skate park outside of the US.

Designed by California Skateparks, the skate park features graphics, obstacles and handrails inspired by Aztec artwork and aesthetics. The skate park also features a mosaic sculpture by artist Luis Ponce at the entrance.

At the base of the installation is a depiction of Jaguar Warriors, a rank of the Aztec military. At the top are Eagle Warriors, a superior rank. This historical allusion creates an allegory for individual progress in skateboarding.

‘The continued growth of the sport was behind our interest to collaborate with the Mexico City government to promote skateboarding further among the local community,’ says Mauricio Contreras, brand manager for Nike SB.

It is a smart move for Nike to create a free facility for aspiring skateboarders in the city, and one that will win over fans. Brands should consider ways in which they can enrich communities and enter into civic discussions. For another example of a community-driven space, read our Innovate feature on 11 11 Lincoln Road.
