Pizza party: Short films celebrate restaurant’s opening

18 : 08 : 2014 Manchester : Pizza : Art-To-Go

Manchester – PLY is a new pizzeria coming to the city’s bustling Northern Quarter. The restaurant is still under construction, so as Mancunians patiently wait, PLY is offering a teaser, an exhibition of 90-second films about pizza that are on continual rotation.

PLY commissioned seven artists to create videos for an exhibition, #PLYin90seconds, which are now being shown on screens in the windows of the soon-to-open restaurant. The short timeframe was chosen because that is how long it will take for a PLY pizza to be cooked in the pizza oven imported from Naples.

Artists used a variety of mediums and tools to interpret the theme, including weaving, Vine and YouTube. Mystic Pizza by Layla Sailor is a hypnagogic, brightly coloured GIF, while Pizza Eating Monsters by Will Broome focuses on the illustrator’s childhood love of drawing.

In our Art-To-Go microtrend, we explored how retailers were collaborating with artists to create more accessible art for the public. #PLYin90seconds brings new names to passers-by and also acts as advertising for the new restaurant. The artists chosen will also have solo shows at the restaurant later in the year.
