Liquid gold: Food products go luxe

12 : 06 : 2014 Gold : Edible Gold : Gold Leaf

Athens – Oh My Gold is a new brand of Greek condiments that have specks of edible gold in them, creating a sense of luxury in an otherwise saturated market.

Oh My Gold features a Greek extra virgin olive oil with edible gold flakes as well as honey and marmalade products laced with ruby-coloured flecks. While the gold leaf is flavourless, it adds a luxurious quality to the products to make them stand out on the shelves. Similarly, the packaging refrains from traditional Greek tropes of vines and olive trees, and looks more like a beauty product than a foodstuff. Created by G Design studio for the new brand Blessed Land, the packaging was 'inspired by the highly coveted gold bars'. The name, which it also developed, 'is a neologism addressing admiration, excitement and wonder'.

In our Food & Drinks Futures report, gold was listed as one of the top 10 ingredients to watch in 2014.To find out more, buy the report in The Future Laboratory Shop
