Better by design: Hotel creates rooms with individual styles

05 : 06 : 2014 Hotel Not Hotel : Travel : Amsterdam

Amsterdam – Personality is in ample supply at a new hotel in Amsterdam, where each room has been created by a different designer.

Nestled in the western part of the city, Hotel Not Hotel features nine rooms created by members of Eindhoven-based design collective Collaboration-O and Dutch design duo Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.

The Casa No Casa room resembles a bijou Spanish villa, while the Secret Book Case room is hidden behind a wall of antique books. The cottage-like Crisis Free Zone room boasts an elaborate gothic wooden façade with a skull motif, while the inside resembles a tiny chapel where ‘creatures like vampires, ghosts and bankers will never be able to enter’, according to Hotel Not Hotel’s website. An Amsterdam Tram Cart room harks back to the city’s past with a restored tram housing a king-sized bed.

The hotel’s interior is designed to have a village feel, with a convivial bar, shared bathrooms and an exhibition space replacing the traditional hotel lobby. Prices are reasonable, and intended to appeal to design-conscious Millennials in search of the quirky and local.
