Smart cycle: Bike uses technology and community to be smarter

Toronto – Canadian startup Vanhawks has begun a Kickstarter campaign for Valour, a connected bicycle that uses technology to make riding safer for the urban cyclist.

Valour not only looks sleek with its carbon fibre frame and ergonomic design, but it is also an incredibly intelligent vehicle thanks to its accompanying app. The app connects to the bicycle, gathering the usual data such as distance, routes and calories burned. In addition, it uses GPS and sends signals to the bicycle’s handlebars where there are LED lights that blink when the cyclist needs to turn left or right – no more looking down at smartphones while driving. Valour also has haptic feedback and sensors, which means it can sense vehicles surrounding it, vibrating to warn riders when they are too close to traffic on the road.

The bicycle also learns through a Bike 2 Bike network, with each Valour bicycle communicating with each other about better routes to avoid potholes or hills. The community makes Valour smarter with each ride.

Cycling in the city is becoming the commuter’s choice of transport. For more, read our Pedal Power market report.
