In the air: Designer’s illusion could inspire retail spaces

11 : 04 : 2014 Optical Illusion : Retail Space : Interiors

Seoul – Artist Kyung Woo Han’s installation, Green House, appeared to be a flooded room filled with floating furniture, when in reality it was clever painting and specially constructed chairs.

Han built a set of tables and chairs that are bent yet symmetrical, and painted them different shades of green so they appear to be mirror images of each other, with one side submerged in water. He then suspended the furniture in mid-air using fine wires to create the illusion of floating. The entire room is also painted in the same two shades of green, creating a line that suggests where the water begins and ends.

LS:N Global has seen the trompe l’oeil effect being taken up by lots of designers to create interest and new perspective. Han’s method of illusion could easily be translated into a retail space, creating a mind-bending visual merchandising display.
