Stockholm – French design studio Färg & Blanche is showing a range of wooden furniture at Stockholm Furniture Fair – so far, so traditional. But instead of square cabinets and right-angled bookshelves, the two designers sewed the wood together to create improbably curved shapes.
Using an industrial sewing machine that is normally used to sew car seats, Fredrik Färg and Emma Marga Blanche carefully shaped plywood sections and sewed them together.
‘We were inspired by tailoring used in men’s suit construction,’ Emma Marga Blanche tells LS:N Global. ‘Sewing is a traditional technique and wood is a traditional material, but when combined together they create something more surprising and extreme.’
At first glance, the Wood Tailoring series appears to be made from a different material with a faux wood grain. The fact that the designers managed to manipulate wood in an unexpected way recalls our Haptic Illusion design direction, in which the use of materials means all is not what it seems.
