Miami – For Design Miami/, London studio Glithero created the Silverware series of porcelain vases that used photosensitive chemicals to capture images of seaweed.
The designers collected seaweed samples from the English Channel and configured them onto the surface of the porcelain, which was treated in advance with photosensitive chemicals. The vases were then exposed to a rotating light machine and transferred to photo baths to reveal delicate organic forms against a deep black background.
The pieces are on view at Galerie Vivid alongside classic works by Gerrit Rietveld, a Dutch furniture designer strongly associated with the De Stijl movement. In dialogue with modernist works, Glithero’s vases recall abstract art forms and the early photogram experiments of Man Ray.
