New budget hotels: Dutch get affordable luxury

Amsterdam – A new high-end budget hotel has opened in the heart of Amsterdam’s financial district, perfect for the new breed of no-frills luxury traveller.

The new citizenM hotel, the second from the Dutch leisure group, offers travellers a room within a building full of modern art and design, at just €69–148 (£61–131; $92–198) per night.

Tech has replaced some of the usual frills associated with high-end hotels, with the check-in and check-out processes done via a touch-screen computer, for instance. Within each stylish room, everything is programmable from a portable touch-screen Mood Pad.

‘The great thing about this location is that you feel the buzz of the city,’ says citizenM partner Robin Chadha. ‘It’s vibrant and alive and reflects the aesthetics, philosophies and ambitions of the hotel group.’

We will feature more of this new wave of budget hotels in the forthcoming Leisure and Hospitality Futures Report.
