Superman reloaded: Comic writer lets readers redesign the world’s favourite superhero

London – A writer has asked readers of his blog to come up with different art design solutions: the latest was to redesign the iconic character Superman.

Warren Ellis, best known for graphic novels such as Transmetropolitan, Planetary and Red, asks his followers to forget everything they know about Superman and, using only selective information, reinterpret him in their own style, using whatever methods they wish.

‘You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol,’ Ellis says. ‘You know nothing else about the character.’ The winner was an abstract figure in black and blue by graphic designer Tom Muller.

The open brief allows participants to use any creative medium and let their imaginations run wild. The various outcomes show how useful contributor ideas are and how crowdsourcing can be used to create a buzz.
