London – As sculptor Antony Gormley’s greatly democratising ‘One & Other’ project on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square wraps up, an independent gallery opens its inconspicuous black door today to continue promoting the art of the everyman.
Tucked away on a quiet north London street, the Museum of Everything, which proposes to showcase work by artists outside the mainstream, is an antidote to the grandiose nature of the average gallery. Musician David Byrne and Turner prize-winning artist Grayson Perry are among the curators for Exhibition #1, which includes some 200 drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations by ‘the unknowns of society’, organisers say.
The Museum of Everything is the latest addition to feed the public’s desire for cultural capital and a compelling story. Culture brands are rising in popularity, as we report in our profile of the team behind CultureLabel ; visitors to the Museum of Everything will likely find that they don’t have to look that hard to find them.
