Mix methods: Perfume installation celebrates ritual

15 : 11 : 2013 Perfume : 3D Ceramic Printing : Hypersensoria

Antwerp – Belgian design studio Unfold works with 3D ceramic printing, while perfumer Barnabé Fillion creates small-batch scents. Together, in a collaboration for Maison et Objet, the two created The Peddler, an olfactory installation in which Fillion’s perfume was distilled and diffused through specially crafted 3D-printed vessels.

The ceramic tools were designed to heighten the ritual of perfume-making, and include a vessel for distilled water, one for alcohol and a pipette to mix the scent. When added to the diffusers, the ceramic material absorbed the liquid to release the perfume’s aromatic notes over a long period. The installation also included a wooden contraption that users could spin to release the fragrance in the diffuser.

‘[We] created a set of objects that resemble alchemy tools and utensils to revisit the process of transformation in alchemy,’ says the studio. ‘[They] invite people to be involved in the process, putting a real emphasis on the ritual and the experience of perfume.’

The Peddler creates tactile interaction with scent. For more on how designers are answering consumers’ desire for sensory stimuli, read our Hypersensoria microtrend.
