Vodka by nerds: US distillery embraces science

New York – The Industry City Distillery, located in an industrial part of Brooklyn known as Sunset Park, is proudly ‘made by nerds’, according to the website. The small-batch distillery uses a specially formulated method to create its uniquely flavoured vodka.

Industry City hails the science behind its liquor making. The distillery makes vodka from American sugar beets using equipment built on location with yeast grown in Industry City’s on-site laboratory. The distillery even has a letterpress machine to make the labels that are placed on the bottles by hand. In line with our Re-enlightenment Rising macrotrend, Industry City is embracing science as part of its brand identity.

‘We studied the science behind the tastes, smells, and textures that make up spirits and then set out to make the equipment we needed,’ David Kyrejko, Industry City engineer and distiller tells LS:N Global. ‘The machine shop and laboratory at the distillery let us continually fine tune our process to continually make our vodka better. Like our bottle says, “It’s not magic. It’s applied science.”’

We are witnessing a rise in local, small-batch distilleries that believe in hand-crafted liquor. For more, see our Innovate feature on the London Distillery Company.
