Germany – BMW has introduced a new concept car in which luxury meets sportiness.
The Active Tourer Outdoor, unveiled at Germany’s OutDoor Friedrichshafen show, features hybrid technology and a dedicated space for two bicycles in its boot. The four-door car, which has an electric motor that can power the vehicle for up to 19 miles, uses an electric plug-in system and 1.5-litre front-wheel drive combustion engine, giving it 113 mpg imperial fuel economy. The lithium-ion battery is cleverly stored below the load compartment floor, making room for bicycle storage and other outdoor gear.
The back seats of the car fold flat, revealing a customised bicycle carrier comprising two mounts to hold the bikes and their detached front wheels. Drivers can stow their saddles, tools and other gear in a concealed compartment under the floor. To complete the car’s adventuresome feel, it is equipped with a Heart of the Alps route guide developed with the Austrian Tyrol tourist board.
