Berlin – Mercado San Cosme, a bar and showroom specialising in Mexican drink mezcal, has brought minimalism with a touch of Neo-Kitsch to east Berlin’s Mitte neighbourhood.
Located in a 20th-century butcher’s shop, the bar, designed by Savvy Studio, is a place where customers can enjoy the drink as well as the modern graphic interior, full of traditional, iconic, Mexican-inspired architecture.
Large metal gates at the entrance lead into an eclectic space of unvarnished wood and blue tiled floors typical of a Mexican town, as well as neon shutters and terracotta cactus pots. Some spaces in the building feel very warm, with oak-coloured walls, softly lit bulbous glass bottles and mahogany benches. Multi-coloured rectangular blocks jutting out of the wall serve as coat hooks and break up the angular black and white zigzag pattern in the adjacent bar, designed by Luis Barragán.
