Amsterdam – Reclaiming a former oil rig prototype, a hospitality entrepreneur in the Netherlands hopes to transform this manmade platform into a new leisure facility.
REMisland was built in 1964 and was originally used as a media island for commercial radio and television broadcasts, but was dismantled and brought to shore in 2006. The new project will see Dutch architecture firm Concrete adding another level to the structure to host a restaurant, creating a new exhibition space, and returning the lower deck to its original media function.
As we report in Going Green, reclaiming unused spaces is just one of many sustainable solutions in the leisure and hospitality industry. Thanks to depleted oil resources and pressure from increasingly eco-conscious consumers, sustainability is set to encompass the travel industry as a whole.
