International – DoubleRobotics has developed a telepresence robot that enables people to communicate with anyone from anywhere in the world without being there.
The Double robot, which looks like a Segway, is on wheels and carries an iPad. Users can communicate with people in a different location and can see them on the robot’s iPad screen.
The device moves forwards and backwards, and can be made to turn using controls on the iPad. Its height is adjustable, so people can be seen at eye level whether sitting or standing, ensuring that conversations are natural as if people were present.
With efficient motors and a lightweight design, the robot lets users access anyone who has the device, from a gallery in another country, to an office or university campus tour they might not otherwise be able to reach.
