New York – The Museum of Modern Art is holding the first show to focus on Metahaven, an Amsterdam-based studio that uses graphic design to explore political and economic power structures.
Founded by Daniel van der Velden and Vinca Kruk, Metahaven is interested in data access, transparency and sovereignty. This is reflected in recent identity and branding work for WikiLeaks as well as identity proposals for Sealand, a self-declared independent principality located on a disused World War II platform seven miles off the coast of Britain.
The Metahaven: Islands in the Cloud show includes the recent Data/Saga project completed in partnership with IMMI, the International Modern Media Initiative. Fake promotional posters for Iceland use Netstalgic imagery to emphasise the country’s natural beauty alongside its growing reputation as a refuge for unregulated information storage.
LS:N Global’s Dawn of the Mega-systems presentation at our forthcoming Trend Briefing will explore the idea of visualising networks and power systems.
