Shopping isles: Luxury showcase for British craft

10 : 12 : 2012 Craft : Great Britain : British Luxury

London – Located in a townhouse just off Grosvenor Square in exclusive Mayfair, The New Craftsmen is a revivalist pop-up store with an understated take on British luxury.

Artisans from across the British Isles offer a range of traditionally crafted products, including ceramics, jewellery, furnishings and assorted homewares. The items are not ostentatious, but instead emphasise heritage, sustainability and functionality.

Many items combine craft with contemporary design. The Orkney Chair at The New Craftsmen is a collaboration between East London designer Gareth Neal and Kevin Gauld, who styles himself as The Orkney Furniture Maker and follows centuries-old techniques. Neal travelled to Gauld’s workshop in Scotland to update the design and materials, eventually combining a Windsor chair with the straw backing that characterises the Orkney style.

At The New Craftsmen, the growing demand for sustainable luxury products that we saw in our Haut Sustainable design direction merges with the interest in authenticity that characterises Revivalism.
