Call of nature: Sweatshirts plant a new aesthetic

Kiev – Designer Masha Reva has created Botanical Layers, a range of sweatshirts that plays with contradictions between the spread of hyper-connected lifestyles and our increasing need for a refuge from internet buzz.

The collaboration between the designer and Ukrainian brand Syndicate features digital prints in lush, tropical colours. Hummingbirds, bright flowers and butterflies flit across the fabric – the usual signifiers of refuge from everyday stress.

But Reva has also chipped away at this image by displaying the tools of the modern designer, particularly the ‘layers’ that are familiar to Photoshop users. The prints show progress bars loading, abrupt digital cropping lines and the checkerboard pattern of an empty alpha channel.

While the aesthetic of the collection references aspects of the Netstalgia trend, the design cues from nature also hint at our need to escape technology through New Sublimity lifestyles.
