San Francisco – Online accommodation service Airbnb has launched Neighborhoods, visually rich guides to seven major cities.
With local photography and fresh editorial, Neighborhoods guides visitors to areas that are seldom associated with tourism, such as the Maida Vale canal area in London and Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. ‘We are introducing our community to a neighbourhood’s personality so they can match it with their own,’ says Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb.
A recent study found that Airbnb visitors to San Francisco spent $56m (€43.8m, £35.3m) in the city over the course of a year. At least $15m (€11.7m, £9.4m) was spent outside of the six zip codes with the most hotels, reflecting the broad variety of destinations visited. Airbnb guests stayed longer and spent more – $1,100 (€860, £693) per visit compared to $840 (€657, £530) by hotel guests.
