New York – A new store interior is mixing traditional with sleek modern design. The new Malin+Goetz shop in New York, the second in the city for the cosmetic brand, brings together old and new by contrasting modern, minimal design with the classic wooden panelling that already existed on site.
Unafraid to modernise the interior drastically, designers cut into the old panels to create large, spherical shelving systems in which to display the various products. The result is a modern boutique that is nonetheless in touch with its heritage.
As unpacked in our Alphalux trend, design that offers a sense of heritage – so long as it avoids connotations of being old-fashioned or stuffy – is proving to be a successful strategy for high-end offerings throughout the recession. A nod to the past is just as important as one to the future.
