Natural high: Resort shouts green from rooftops

China – On Hainan island off the southern coast of China lies the “Intercontinental Sanya Resort”, a hospitality and leisure facility designed using sustainable principles.

Created by architecture firm WOHA, the resort consists of villas, restaurants, spas, a sports centre and 200 hotel rooms, the roofs of which are covered in vegetation. The plant-covered roofs help to maintain the local microclimate and act as a water collection system.

A variety of local natural materials are used throughout the resort, including hand-woven fabrics, terrazzo, ceramic tiles and granite, backing up the centre’s sustainable values.
