Paris – As the autumn/winter 2012/2013 fashion season comes to a close, many buyers have favoured ostentatious statement collections rather than playing it safe with more conventional womenswear designs.

Linda Fargo, senior vice-president at Bergdorf Goodman, New York, told Women’s Wear Daily that Alexander McQueen had produced one of the strongest collections, saying: ‘We responded most to collections with rich colour and luxurious material mixes, especially velvet, leather and fur.’

Many luxury retailers, such as Nordstrom and Lane Crawford, Hong Kong, have increased their budgets in order to invest in strong fashion statements to fulfil their customers’ desire for decorative garments in luxurious materials.

The Alexander McQueen autumn/winter 2012/2013 show was darkly romantic and elaborate. Intricate silk jacquards, ostrich-feather embroidery and laser-cut details were enhanced with lambskin leather, goat fur and Mongolian lamb fur – a more opulent and delicate progression of the Jewel Beetles trend on show at London Fashion Week.
