Age of change: TV series explores future home

London – The Future Laboratory co-founder Chris Sanderson is to present a Channel 4 series called Home of the Future in which he will oversee the Perera family in Sheffield as they adapt to living in the home of the future.

Each of the five one-hour episodes will focus on a different theme, and feature many of the design and technology innovations previously covered on LS:N Global. The themes of rest, health, food, work and play will all be explored as the Pereras learn to live with new technologies such as domestic 3D printers, electric cars and domestic fuel cell generators.

According to Sanderson, one of the biggest challenges the family faced was in changes to their diet. ‘This is a family that eats meat 14 times a week,’ he says. ‘We took away their meat and challenged them with the fact that much of our protein in the future will not come from meat, but from other sources such as fish and insects.’

The first episode of Home of the Future will be broadcast on Channel 4 on February 12 at 7pm.

Read about how the home will become an increasingly connected, multi-purpose and customised space in our Future Family macrotrend.
