Starch contrast: A union of craft and industry

27 : 10 : 2011 Craft : Graduate Project : Trade Union

Eindhoven, The Netherlands – Designer Rachel Griffin is presenting her graduation project, Trade Union, at the Design Academy Eindhoven as part of Dutch Design Week. The project explores the dichotomy of craft and industry through a series of hand-made woven vessels.

The pieces were made using old weaving techniques from a starch-based plastic called Solanyl. The material is industrially produced, but naturally biodegradable. Griffin describes the work as ‘a marriage of industrial chemistry and traditional knowledge that allows for a more flexible system of production and design’.

Trade Union is on show as part of the Man and Living: Human section of the Our Way graduate exhibition curated by Ilse Crawford. Look out for more of LS:N Global’s coverage of Dutch Design Week in our Seed and Shows sections.
