Stroke of genius: Nokia typeface is Pure craft

01 : 04 : 2011 Show Your Workings : Craftsmanship : Revival

Helsinki – Finland-based mobile phone company Nokia has unveiled a new typeface, Nokia Pure, created by typography designer Dalton Maag.

In the above video, Pure Reversal, Nokia highlights the craft by Matt McKenzie of London-based Paekakariki Press, and how he produces a woodblock version of the typeface on his original 1959 Heidelberg KS Cylinder 38 × 52 Press.

The typeface references the different stroke weights and more rounded flow of handwriting, creating a more open effect than the Nokia Sans typeface, according to the company. ‘For me,’ explains Maag, ‘it’s the rhythm of the typeface and the relationship between characters that are critical.’

This is a great example of how a technology brand can display the craft process. For more, read our Show Your Working micro trend.
