Chance encounters

06 : 10 : 2016 Revelation Brands : Anywhen : Philippe Parreno

London – An immersive exhibition by artist Philippe Parreno mixes surrealism and serendipity at the Tate’s Turbine Hall.

  • Anywhen aims to deliver a unique experience to each visitor
  • The constantly evolving exhibition features film and audio pieces alongside sculptures and installations

The wide expanse of the Tate’s Turbine Hall is filled with sonic and visual stimuli such as whirring motors and fish-shaped balloons that float across the space. The immersive exhibition, which runs until April 2017, will be in a constant state of flux as Parreno adds and removes elements, creating a seemingly endless variety of unique moments. ‘I am building a library of scenes and events,’ the artist explained to The Guardian.

Reinforcing the element of serendipity, Parreno has included a variety of instruments that monitor the surrounding environment to provide a range of sensory feedback that cannot be controlled. Microphones positioned around the space fill the room with the sound of the river Thames and a seismographer monitors the tectonic activity beneath the building to examine the interplay between nature and technology.

The Big Picture

The rise of technology has led to a decline in chance encounters, but artists are increasingly using it to reintroduce serendipity back into consumers’ lives. To find out more, read our Revelation Brands macrotrend.
