Transnational design

06 : 07 : 2016 PTT Family : Potato Head Hong Kong : Sou Fujimoto

Hong Kong – Hospitality group PTT Family has created an Indonesian hideaway by the coast.

  • Potato Head Hong Kong is the second international outpost of the group’s popular Bali beach club
  • The interior blends Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto’s designs with the work of Indonesian craftsmen

Fujimoto reprised the thin white frames he used in 2013 on the latticework for the Serpentine Gallery pavilion to create a striking and adaptive interior for gourmet coffee shop I Love You So Coffee and a homewares retail space towards the front of the store. Where this space meets the bar, the interior becomes more colourful and solid, with comfortable seating overlooked by Fujimoto’s mirrored plant pots, which hang from the ceiling.

Tucked away towards the back, restaurant Kaum is shrouded in more than 700 carved wood panels, hand-made and painted by Indonesian craftsmen. ‘Commissioning this staggering number of carvings helped ensure the skill is passed on to the younger generations of the village that made them,’ explains PTT Family’s in-house creative team.
