11 : 03 : 2016 Chrome Music Lab : Music In Our Schools Month : Web Design

US – Google has created a microsite of musical discovery that shows off creative applications of its open-source software.

  • Chrome Music Lab was created to celebrate the 43rd annual Music In Our Schools Month
  • The website introduces visitors to the fundamentals of music, from arpeggios and melody to harmonics and rhythm

The microsite features the interactive graphics that Google’s Chrome Experiments has become known for and serves to illustrate the educational power of the internet. Each experiment is a collaboration between musicians and coders, and uses the freely available Web Audio APU tool, which enables anyone to learn the basics of sound manipulation.

LS:N Global favourite Spectrogram visualises the sound frequencies generated by a variety of objects, including a harp, a trumpet and a dial-up modem. Other experiments include Voice Spinner, which manipulates the pitch of users’ recordings through a simple click-and-swipe interface, and Rhythm, which tests a user’s ability to keep time.

The Big Picture

Projects such as Chrome Music Lab appeal to young digital natives who express an affinity for highly visual and intuitive applications. Our forthcoming Gen Viz macrotrend examines how this mindset will influence the design of digital and physical spaces and branding in the future.
